Circularity and Sustainability

Updated: Jan 11, 2022

I talk about circularity and sustainability A LOT but what exactly does this mean?

CIRCULARITY

In our current economy, we take materials from the Earth, make products from them, and eventually throw them away as waste – the process is linear. It's a TAKE-MAKE-WASTE system as in the diagram below.

By contrast, in a circular economy we stop waste being produced in the first place. It's a MAKE-USE-RECYCLE system and it's circular.

Circularity is based on three principles:

  • Eliminate waste and pollution

  • Circulate products and materials

  • Regenerate nature

We must transform every element of our take-make-waste system: how we manage resources, how we make and use products, and what we do with the materials afterwards. Only then can we create a thriving circular economy that can benefit everyone within the limits of our planet.

Basically we must stop using finite resources and creating harmful waste products and instead transition to using regenerated and recycled materials that produce no waste at all.

Circularity is a resilient system that is good for business, people and the environment and essential for the planet at this point in time.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Sustainability and circularity is at the very core of Colour Rebel as a way of thinking, a way of being and a principle to be guided by.
